GDR Roadrunners

Hello from my archives. Here some images from vehicles driven in the former GDR. Actually I have never made it to drive a Trabant or Wartburg. Friends told me that it was an unforgetable event to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3 Minutes.

Fortunately these environmental monsters disappeared from the streets because they were stinking terribly.

East Berlin and Potsdam 1990

What a great exciting time it has been 1989 – 1990 in Berlin when the wall had felt and it was possible to discover East Berlin and the areas around Berlin. It was a time to take photos of unique street scenes and to document the results from 40 years of socialism.

The houses in the East were grey and broken. The East Germans said: “What the second world war didn’t destroy, the communists did.”  Today these places disappeared with its fascination for every photographer. Enjoy some of the photos I have taken as a youngster.

I am a Berliner

Hey, I am a Berliner – a real one. I was born and grew up in West-Berlin surrounded by the Wall. When it finally came down in November 1989 I have been there. Together with my friends from school an daddy’s Canon AE1-Program I took several images.

A fascinating time I do remember often. Being a part of something historical makes me goose bumps – still today. Here you will find some images of summer 1989,  from November / December 1989 when the wall came down and February 1990.

In December 2011 and last February I have been a couple of hours in Barcelona before heading north to the Pyrenees.

Beside the fantastic architecture to discover, this is a  paradise for street photography. Although in the economical crisis, this city is so dynamic and full of life. I drove from the airport to the Placa de Catalunya parking, passing one of the most terrible roundabouts in my life. Just by walking the streets around the Placa de Catalunya with  La Rambla, the cathedral, Mercado de San Jose and the Placa Reial gave me  great impressions – and photos.

Also the area around the El Prat Airport is wonderful to see. South of  Terminal 2 I found a nature reserve used by many citizens for walking, jogging and relaxing. Furthermore the community installed a platform for plane spotting (see  here all the places, I enjoyed staying at points 1,2,3).

Here some of my impressions from a 2 hours photowalk.
